That’s Grouse: The British Show | Gallery 8 | 22nd – 29th May, 2012

Australian pop artist Linton Meagher re-imagines shell casings, lipsticks and scalpels in first UK solo show.

That’s Grouse”. The British Show surveys the cross-media work of Linton Meagher. Showcasing works with international appeal, “That’s Grouse” The British Show playfully considers the construction of identity, touching upon motifs in contemporary pop culture. Through a painstakingly repetitive artistic practice, Meagher moves familiar, functional objects into the realm of fine art, encouraging and challenging viewers to question their meaning for contemporary society.

“That’s Grouse” is an Australian colloquialism referring to something excellent or fantastic: this tongue-in-cheek exhibition is a mischievous exploration of cultural iconography that’s equally relevant in both Australia and the UK. Through a painstakingly repetitive artistic practice, Meagher moves familiar, functional objects into the realm of fine art, encouraging and challenging viewers to question their meaning for contemporary society

Constructed from hundreds of shotgun cartridges, bullet casings, imitation lipsticks and surgical scalpels, Meagher’s large three-dimensional drawings can be enjoyed on many levels, both visually and conceptually.

The marriage of disparate meanings and objects is a theme throughout Meagher’s work and is particularly evident as repellent objects such as bullets or surgical scalpels are transformed to portray beauty.

Taking inspiration from Jeff Koons’ and Arman’s irreverent approach to art-making materials, Meagher’s practice often examines a symbolically loaded object, such as a shotgun cartridge (referencing both gun control issues in Australia and hunting heritage in the UK), and utilises its aesthetic appeal to encourage the viewer to reflect on the world around them.

“On the surface, these works are just fun, sensual and instantly engaging: with the shotgun cartridge works, the viewer is initially seduced by the beauty of the piece.

However, it is hard to look past the death implied by all the empty cartridges. They force the viewer to ponder the economics of the endless pursuit of thrills and beauty. These works are also an extension of the artistic tradition of exploring mass consumerism and the use of ready-made objects in art.”

Linton Meagher
Linton Meagher is a Australian-born, contemporary Artist. After his studies at the University of Sydney, majoring in Fine Art, Linton went on to exhibit in group and solo exhibitions across Sydney and Hong Kong. In addition Meagher completed commissions for Blackmores and the World Health Organisation.

Meagher’s art work has evolved from utilising traditional methods such as oil on canvas, to working semi sculpturally, by using resin and Perspex to bring his vision into three dimensions. Interested in consumerism and the impermanence of time, notably Linton also trained in medicine, which gives further inspiration into a practice exploring temporality.
~Linton is not a usual artist, his day job is as a psychiatrist, who deals with woman who feel the pressure to look good. He draws attention to this by manipulating what mediums which are stripped of their original functions. Further information can be found at www.lintonmeagher.com

UNI LAG FASHION WEEK IS HERE!! – Naomi Keshinro

We go on a journey to know more of Naomi Kofoworola Keshinro, CEO of Kona Signature Limited and creative Director of KonaSignature clothing brand

The designer discovered her passion for fashion during her days at the university where she studied Business administration. She was a style icon at her days in school for her great sense of panache, colour combination and impeccable appearance.

In her quest to stand out from the crowd she began designing her own garments by working with local tailors to create styles missing from her wardrobe as an undergraduate for her own consumption. She knew what she wanted, what was missing in her wardrobe and could bring her ideas to life

Her burning flame for fashion and creativity grew by the day but Naomi couldn’t cut a fabric, neither could she sew and was an awful illustrator and this propelled her to study fashion to learn the basics and nitty-gritty of the industry to become a better designer.

She studied fashion at the prestigious London College of Fashion and Newham College where she immensely gained and developed her skills as an illustrator, pattern cutter, garment technologist and a fabric designer.

Naomi worked as a Property Consultant and while commuting to work, she discovered the gap in cutting edge work wear. In her own words “it hurts me to see women not taking pride in their feminism, I do appreciate that life is hard enough and it is easy not to be bothered about the way you look but please make a little bit more effort in your daily appearance. Women spend a lot of money buying party or occasion outfits that they hardly wear but spend little to nothing on clothes that they wear 80% of the week. I believe we meet more people during our cause of work than anywhere else in our lives and this is our main opportunity to say who we are and make an impression of ourselves. Believe it or not the way you look tells a story about you”.

The 21st century woman juggles work, family and social life together and needs clothes that fit into these varying roles perfectly and this is the inspiration behind the fashion brand KonaSignature.

Today she has grown from being a style icon, to being a fashion mogul, owning a Fashion Consulting Firm, clothing Brand, Fashion Academy and being model. She is a goal getter, purposely driven and motivated towards achievement. Conscious of her attributes and willing to flaunt it towards her goals

KonaSignature, a cutting edge fashion brand for the contemporary woman enabling her make a fashion statement always, wearing the same outfit to work, family commitments and socializing, fitting into these roles perfectly on its own or with accessories. Each piece from us is a true work of art, timeless and exquisite. Each piece is timeless, exquisite and cutting edge

Each piece is timeless, exquisite and cutting edge

Jessie J – Is she or isn’t she?

Pop star Jessie J who is also a judge on BBC the Voice has come out and defended her corner from rumours suggesting she is Gay and quickly put the story straight buy confirming she is Bisexual to her fans on twitter.  I guess some could say she “says it like a dude” when it comes down to her sexual preferences and continues to remain upfront about it.

Jessie labelled the stories boring and untrue and blasted various other rumours about her dating other celebrities that she hasn’t even met. Jessie J has recently gone on record and admitted that she has a soft spot for Rihanna and whilst making a special appearance at the BBC to cover RiRi’s we found love,  Jessie J replicated the Bajans artist’s favourite designer.

As far as the Domino singer is concerned she likes boys and girls but doesn’t see what all the big deal is.   Taken from an unauthorised biography Jessie J Who’s laughing now published in the Sun April 19th Cloe Govan makes claim that the Laser light singer was instructed to withhold the fact that she was lesbian by record label big wigs.

However Jessie J unfazed by all rumours seems to dust herself off as she gets back down to business as usual.

FROM GEORGIANA TO BOY GEORGE – Stephen Jones (19th May – 2nd September 2012)

One of British Fashion’s best loved characters, whose client list boasts style icons such as French First Lady Carla Bruni alongside pop divas Madonna and Kylie Minogue, is exhibiting a selection of his stunning creations at The Bowes Museum this summer.

Milliner Stephen Jones, whom Italian Vogue’s Anna Piaggi describes as ‘the maker of the most beautiful hats in the world’, has worked with some of the world’s most prominent fashion houses and designers during his illustrious career, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior, John Galliano and Giles Deacon. And now he is lending a selection of his fabulous hats for the show From Georgiana to Boy George, which opens at the Barnard Castle treasure house on Saturday 19th May.

One of the original New Romantic style setters, Jones saw his passion for museums fuelled when he studied at St Martin’s School of Art in the late 1970s. He opened his first millinery salon in Covent Garden in 1980, with an eclectic client mix which included the then Lady Diana Spencer and Visage front man Steve Strange, and was soon asked to create hats for catwalk shows. His hats can be inspired by an historical discovery or an imagined narrative prompted by an artefact, painting or photograph, with designs drawn from relics of the Renaissance, cluttered Victoriana, the glamour of the 1930s and the ‘swinging sixties.’

The Georgian era is a period Jones returns to again and again, especially the Regency. He is entranced by the elegance of neo-classical architecture, the romantic poets, fluttering plumes, bonnets and turbans, which he describes as ‘having history between every seam.’

Always at the cutting edge of fashion, his captivating hats habitually adorn the chicest magazine covers, and now they will be modelled by a collection of vintage mannequins in The Bowes Museum’s stunning Fashion & Textile Gallery.

Joanna Hashagen, The Bowes Museum’s Keeper of Fashion & Textiles, said: “We are delighted to have attracted such a top designer as Stephen Jones to exhibit in our amazing gallery, which recently hosted a highly successful exhibition of Vivienne Westwood Shoes. To have Stephen’s hats here really is topping it off in a prestigious manner.”

Dubbed ‘the most original milliner working today’, Jones, whose boutique and atelier is still based in Covent Garden, was awarded the OBE in 2009 for his services to millinery. His work is represented in the permanent collections of a number of international museums, including the V&A in London, the Louvre in Paris, The Fashion Institute of Technology and the Brooklyn Museum (both New York), the Kyoto Costume Institute, Japan, and the Australian National Gallery in Canberra.

For further information about Stephen Jones see www.stephenjonesmillinery.com.

The Bowes Museum, Café Bowes and Shop are open daily from 10.00. A full programme of events and exhibitions is available by calling 01833 690606 or by viewing www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk.
